Funeral Director Assistant

DESCRIPTION: FUNERAL ASSISTANT We are a family owned and family centered company committed to providing our community with compassionate care at challenging times. Our ideal candidate is a caring individual who enjoys working outside the confines of a cubicle. This third generation, single location family funeral home is looking for an energetic, empathetic, individual to assist with a number of responsibilities. May assist with funerals while not acting as a primary director; Assists with funeral services and visitation, including greeting family members, friends and clergy, coordinating instruction of pallbearers and driving funeral coach, family car, flower car and/or related vehicles and the specific functions & duties associated with each type of vehicle.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a non-licensed funeral position. Transfer of the deceased from residence, nursing home or hospital to funeral home. Transfer of remains to/from airports, hospitals, cemeteries, funeral homes and/or mortuary service facilities. Assists in answering phones, providing general information, taking messages, and forwarding calls as needed. Coordinates parking lot and family vehicles at both church and funeral home services through all types of weather. May assist in delivery/pick up of death certificate. Prepares draft and prints prayer cards/register books. Gives a hand with light housekeeping duties as necessary before and after services, to include vacuum sweeping, dusting, attention to restrooms, emptying trash receptacles, setting up/taking down chairs, checking in flowers, helping with sweeping of sidewalks in summer and shoveling of walks in the winter. Other tasks to be assigned as needed. Keeps all funeral home vehicles clean & fueled. The ability to interact and collaborate effectively with others in a team atmosphere. Honest in abiding by company policies and procedures. Be well organized, punctual, dependable and attentive to detail. Must possess business-style attire; dark suit, light shirt (or blouse), conservative tie (for men), dress shoes and the like, and keep conservative grooming habits while at work. Must maintain company and family confidentiality. Attendants may also assist with the preparation of the deceased and casket. Data entry of document information into proprietary systems.

REQUIREMENTS. The ability to work beyond standard business hours, including evenings, weekends and non specified holidays, is required. This can be both indoor and outdoor during all kinds of weather. No night calls between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Valid Ohio Driver’s license and clean driving record required. This is non-negotiable. Candidate will be asked to submit to background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use computer, phone, fax, copier and printer. Familiarity with Microsoft Office is a plus. Ability to work with kindness and compassion for the deceased and their families. Ability to maintain composure in challenging situations. Good verbal and written communications skills. Drive company owned vehicles, with and without passengers, in surrounding community with varying traffic conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent, continuous periods of time standing. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; push/pull up to 250 pounds. Physical effort requiring manual dexterity is required, includes paperwork, calculators, computers, and phone usage. Ability to travel by standard methods of transportation. Light maintenance and landscaping included.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: 6 months or more related experience is preferred.
