Funeral Director/Embalmer

T.P. WHITE & SONS FUNERAL HOME

PURPOSE:  The Funeral Director/Embalmer will direct and coordinate all aspects of funeral services including body preparation, visitation, services, burials, and cremations, while providing caring support and advice to families and friends of the deceased.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides knowledgeable and caring support to family and friends of deceased; meets with family of the deceased to discuss the nature and time of funeral arrangements to be conducted.
  • Coordinates practical arrangements for the funeral that are respectful, professional, timely, and sensitive. This may include transferring the body to the burial site, providing transportation of the family, or arranging visitations and services.
  • Coordinates the transfer of the body or remains to the funeral home.
  • Perform the embalming process.
  • Schedules clergy, music & Military for services.
  • Communicate with cemeteries for scheduling, opening, and closing of facilities and gravesites, as necessary.
  • Generate the death notices, obituaries, and related paperwork to government agencies and preferred newspapers or other appropriate media.
  • Ensures paperwork is filed in a timely and orderly manner, consulting with family to obtain accurate and necessary information for completion.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by management.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to manage distressing and stressful situations with sensitivity and care.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Thorough understanding of methods for comforting people during grief.
  • Thorough understanding of laws related to funerals and funeral arrangements.
  • Ability to execute promptly and accurately required legal paperwork.
  • Ability to perform mortuary services.
  • Detail-oriented and extremely organized.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  A bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science is required. At least 5 years’ experience preferred, but not required.

Certifications: Ohio Funeral Director/Embalmer License according to State of Ohio requirements, or the ability to reciprocate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Required schedule in addition to Monday-Friday, rotating on-call days, including weekends, holidays and back up, which is subject to change with call volume.
  • Must be available to make arrangements, embalm or run services as a backup Funeral Director when the Primary Funeral Director is already engaged in funeral directing activities or embalming.
  • Must be able to respond to Funeral Call within 30-60 minutes when On Call.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & MAINTENANCE:

  • Prolonged stationary periods at a desk and working on a computer, using repetitive motion.
  •  Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds without assistance.  Must be able to lift up 50-200 pounds with equipment as provided. Utilize assistance and provided equipment for weight over 200 pounds.
  • Washing, vacuuming, & drying funeral home vehicles.
  • Light cleaning of funeral home facility.
  • Help with general upkeep of the funeral home grounds and landscaping
