Working in this industry can be very stressful and may account for why so many funeral directors leave the industry within the first five years. With the pandemic, school shootings and other traumatic events, we need to help our first responders find ways to not only cope with their stress but to also find ways to prevent it from negatively affecting them. This research does just that.

Melanie Carr

Dr. Melanie Carr has worked in the funeral industry for the past 13 years. During this time, she has served in both business to consumer and business to business roles. She currently is a Director of Sales Development for Funeral Directors Life overseeing North Central Texas and the state of Arkansas.

Dr. Carr’s educational credentials include a B.A. in Communications from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, a M.A. in Human Services from Liberty University, and a Ph.D. in Performance Psychology from Grand Canyon University. Melanie researched the topic of emotional intelligence and occupational stress while working on her dissertation. Her findings led her to write “Emotional Intelligence for Funeral Directors: The Secret to Less Stress and Burnout at Work.” Since its release, Dr. Carr has hosted workshops and spoken on this subject to various funeral homes, groups and association. She was also featured in an issue of American Funeral Directors magazine.
