Charles Douglas Cunningham

OFDA received word this afternoon that Charles Douglas Cunningham, 64, died Thursday, January 17, 2008. Mr. Cunningham was the brother of Ann Cunningham, Executive Director of the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors of Ohio.

He was born on December 30, 1943 in Cincinnati to Charles L. and Charline Thompson Cunningham, both deceased. Doug spent his early childhood in Clinton County before the family returned to Fayette County where he was raised in Bloomingburg. He was a 1962 graduate of Bloomingburg High School. He retired in 1992 as a HVAC technician at Ohio State University and had most recently been self-employed. He was a member of the Bloomingburg United Methodist Church.

Doug was a veteran of the US Navy where he enlisted in 1964. He served 9 months on the destroyer, USS Towers DDG9 in the Pacific before entering submarine school in New London, Connecticut. He served two and a half years on the submarine USS John Adams SSBN620 as a machinist mate 2nd class based in Charleston, North Carolina.

Survivors include his siblings John M. (Karen) Cunningham of Springfield, Christopher T. (Trudy) Cunningham of The Woodlands, Texas, Anita A. Cunningham of Grove City and Robin R. (Gary) Beekman of Bloomingburg; nieces Casey and Jennifer Cunningham of Texas, nephews Brian (Julie) Cunningham and Brad (Aimee) Cunningham of Springfield, Brent (Gail) Cunningham of Fairborn, Jayson and Jonathan Beekman of Bloomingburg; great-nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and friends and Aunt Martha Haines of Washington CH.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Ronald Dodds officiating with burial to follow in the Bloomingburg Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Summers Funeral Home on Monday, January 21, 2008 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
