Charles F. Johnson

OFDA received word this morning that member Charles F. Johnson, 95, of Painesville, died November 10, 2006, at Fairmount Health Center of Breckenridge Village, Willoughby.

Mr. Johnson graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1930, and came to Painesville in 1937, to work for the Fiser Funeral Home. After Mr. Fiser's death, he opened his own funeral home at 109 N. State Street, Painesville, the present site of the Morley Library. In 1968, he was one of the first businesses to be moved by urban renewal and relocated his funeral home to its current location on Mentor Avenue. He retired in 1990, but remained active in the business up until his illness in December 2003. He was a member of the Tri-County Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association.

Survivors are his daughters, Marguerite Kay (Robert) Merchant and Kathie (John) Popovich; sons, Richard (Carol) Johnson, Timothy (Bea) Root and Thomas (Ann) Root; grandchildren, Marjorie (Wayne) Walker, Charles (Jennifer) Johnson, Benjamin (Christina) Johnson, Melissa (Chad) Tekavic, Jeffrey (Pamela) Root, Gretchen (Chris) Joslin, Shelley (Anthony) Politis and Cindy (George) Karamitos; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie (Lapham), in 1960; second wife, Pauline (Humphries) Root Johnson, in 1995; and brother, Paul L., in 1994.

Friends may call 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM Monday, November 13 at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Avenue, (opposite Lake Erie College), Painesville. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 14 at the United Methodist Church of Painesville, 71 N. Park Place, Painesville. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
